Words of kindness are works of kindness, and since they cost so little and are worth so much, we should strew them plentifully all along life's way. ~Modern Proverbs

Monkeying Around - from Jon (in honor of the Chinese New Year which begins on January 22nd - this will be the year of the monkey)
Monkeying around can get you in trouble. Remember Pandora
In myth, Pandora was the first woman ever to be created. At the request of Zeus, she was fashioned from clay by Hephaestus and blessed with every gift the gods could grant. Zeus then endowed her with a box to present to the man who married her, thereby planning to destroy Prometheus' creation of man by giving Pandora to him as a wife. Realizing, however, that Prometheus would be too wise to accept the gift, Zeus conducted her to his less cautious brother, Epimetheus, who married her and opened the box thereby unleashing all the evils and diseases to afflict the world. Only hope lingered at the bottom of the box to console man in his troubles.
I got a tickle out of the political cartoon in yesterday's paper. The head line reads "Previous winners of the Iowa Democratic Caucus" and the cartoon itself shows 4 politicians, each with a label on his shirt that read: "President Mondale," "President Gephardt," President Harkin," and "President Gore." posted by deborah

Another Science Project
Each year whichever one of my 4 foster sons who is in the seventh grade has a science project. I love science as much as the next person, but this project is just a pain in the neck as far as I'm concerned. Actually getting the kid to it is frustrating as they have certain days to get certain things done.
Like tomorrow, for instance, my seventh grader has to present his first oral report. HAS HE DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT YET? No, of course not.
His project is about trees absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night. A process called "evapotranspiration," I've learned.
A single tree absorbes as much as 600,000 BTU of solar radiation every day and evaporates water into the air. Trees it turns out are nature's air conditioners.
How did I learn this? By doing about FIVE MINUTES of research on the Internet. Something he hadn't done yet!
Indeed, Ebay has turned out to be a vintage jewelry paradise for me. I just have to put a limit on the amount I can spend there each month. Treasures so far:
